Numb and Number
Theme of the Week: Entertainment: No Laughing Matter
Rod Parsley
Monday, June 5, 2006

Key Bible Verse: Their God is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and all they think about is this life Philippians 3:19). Bonus Reading: Philippians 3:17-20

What is it that we are all watching so obsessively on TV? Sex, dysfunction, perversity, cynicism, and skepticism. And then there's the violence. The average American child watches 8,000 made-for-TV murders and 10,000 acts of violence by the end of grade school. By the time he's graduated from high school, that number will have doubled.

Remember the disgusting Super Bowl display? It was little more than razzle-dazzle pornography. CBS offered an apology for the "unintentional" nudity in the show. So did the NFL. But that was only the half of it.

How about the lyrics? How about the bumping, the grinding, and the risqué outfits? Didn't they expect such lowbrow high jinks when they booked the likes of P. Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock, Janet Jackson, and Justin Timberlake in the first place?

Even before Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction," almost a billion people were assaulted with her singing about a man's "package" (street slang for "sex organ") and how she was "gonna have to ride it tonight." We've certainly "evolved" from a time when Rhett Butler's use of the word "damn" in Gone with the Wind was met with a collective gasp—to a "dumb-and-dumber, numb-and-number" culture.

My Response: What biblical standards have I allowed television viewing to erode?

0Prayer for the Week

Help me, Lord, to jam those media voices that would drown out Your voice.
