Men of Integrity, May/June 2006

Uncalculated Risk
Theme of the Week: The Reason Behind the Rules
Monday, May 1

Key Bible Verse: "Stay on the path that the Lord your God has commanded you to follow" (Deuteronomy 5:33). Bonus Reading: Isaiah 48:17-19

World War II had just ended, and the ship my father was stationed aboard stopped in the Philippines for an air show celebration. But not everyone was celebrating. There were Japanese soldiers hiding in the jungle who didn't even know the war was over.

A group of sailors, including my father, talked their commander into giving them a day off to go to the beach. As they piled into the back of a military truck, the commander strictly ordered the driver to not stop along the highway under any circumstances.

As they rumbled through the jungle, my father lost his hat in the wind and watched it float to a standstill in the middle of the road. The sailors banged their fists on the cab roof to get the driver's attention, yelling at him to stop. The driver, determined to obey orders, drove on as if he hadn't heard them. Before the truck rounded the next curve, the sailors saw Japanese soldiers dart out of the jungle from both sides of the road, scoop up the hat, and disappear.

The rest of the trip to the beach was somber. The sailors realized that they'd been willing to take a foolish chance because they didn't understand the reasons behind their commander's orders.

My Response: Must I see the consequences of disobedience before I'm willing to obey?

Help me, Lord, to realize that your commands are loving safeguards, not arbitrary restrictions.
