Men of Integrity, May/June 2006

Is There Time Enough?
Theme of the Week: Whose Time Spent Whose Way?
Sunday, May 7

Who Said It
David Henderson

In college, David started a club called CHUTE Once (College Humans Usually Try Everything Once). Members tried parachuting, hot-air ballooning, spelunking, and white-water rafting.

Now he is senior pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in West Lafayette, Indiana (where Purdue University is located), and the author of Culture Shift. David loves to collect rocks; the shelves of his study are lined with geologic wonders from around the world. "I sure get some curious looks from customs officials," he says.

What He Said
Is There Time Enough?

Has God given us enough time? No, not if through our busyness we're trying to find significance, fill boredom, cover pain, gain acceptance, or safeguard our futures (or those of our children). However, there's all the time in the world for us to do those things to which God calls us. Time to pray, to enjoy God, to sleep, to further the kingdom.

Paul talked (in Acts 20:24, NIV) about finishing the race and completing the task that the Lord Jesus had given him of testifying to the gospel. That sounds a lot like squeezing the infinite into the finite. But not many years later, with the task still far from finished, Paul was able to write, "I have finished the race" (2 Timothy 4:7). The task remained, but Paul was true to his God-given calling within it. He didn't need to do it all; he only needed to complete that part of the task that God had given him. It's not so important that I manage time, but that I let God manage me.
