Men of Integrity, May/June 2006

Give Me a Break!
Theme of the Week: Whose Time Spent Whose Way?
Tuesday, May 9

Key Bible Verse: Whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, you must do all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Bonus Reading: Psalm 139:23-24

The throw from the shortstop was over my head. When I jumped to catch the ball at first base, something snapped in my lower right leg. My teammates surrounded me; someone in the stands called 911. The doctor told me that I'd ruptured my Achilles tendon. Four days later he surgically repaired it. I spent the next 12 weeks on crutches, followed by three months of physical therapy.

Before my injury, my life was chaos. I needed a break in my overcrowded schedule but didn't know how to get it. One night, shortly before I got hurt, I sat down at my computer and poured out my heart to God in my journal, seeking His guidance. I listed all the activities on my schedule and asked God to show me which ones He wanted me to continue.

Now that my injury had emptied my schedule, I took the time to listen to God. One morning during my devotions I read 1 Corinthians 10:31. A question in my devotional guide read, "What parts of my life do I do for 'my name,' 'my glory,' and 'for me'?" In that moment the Holy Spirit began to work in me. I decided to reevaluate my schedule and discontinue any activity that didn't bring glory to God. [continued 5/10]

My Response: What would it take to get me to seriously evaluate my time commitments?
