He's Totally Trustworthy Theme of the Week: Why We Call Him Father Tuesday, August 1, 2006
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: "No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I said" (Psalm 89:34). Bonus Reading: Deuteronomy 7:7-9
We've all heard about polygraphs, the so-called lie detectors that, when connected by sensors to a person's body, read the subject's heart rate and respiration. Supposedly, certain increases in activity alert the polygrapher that the subject is being deceptive. Are these devices accurate? Polygraphs have frequently been used to implicate or exonerate suspects during a criminal investigation. But their reports are still not accepted as evidence in court since it's possible to fool the machine.
God, on the other hand, is never fooled. He's been in the lie-detecting business ever since He created man, and His ruling is infallible. Actually, God should be called a truth detector, for His very presence draws confession from those whom He questions. Few are so bold as to lie in the light of God's glory.
As fathers, we're responsible to live out God's truth-telling character, modeling His trustworthiness for our children. Now that Jesus has ascended into heaven, we're His lights in this present darkness. As we live the truth, we'll be able to detect it in all of life's challenges and plant little lights in our children's vulnerable souls.

My Response: If God is indeed a "truth detector," what pretense should I abandon?
Thought to Apply: God doesn't give us all we want, but He does fulfill all His promises, leading us along the best and straightest paths to Himself.—DIETRICH BONHOEFFER
