Anger Mismanagement Theme of the Week: Why Do We Lose It? Cliff Denay Jr. Wednesday, August 9, 2006
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control (Proverbs 29:11, NIV). Bonus Reading: Proverbs 19:3,11,19
I raged at my stupidity. Somehow, the too-short door was in my hands. I sprinted through the house and the summer heat, thinking revenge, spewing profanity like a gushing well. I threw the fatally injured door against the garage wall. Racing to the open doorway, I hunted for a weapon. My eyes settled on an old acquaintance.
The sledgehammer.
The oak handle felt comfortable, familiar, like a faithful friend. I had split countless cords of firewood with this companion.
Now, I had kindling on my mind. It would do the job. I raised the weight and swung with all my might. The iron head crashed through a panel of the soft pine door like a warm knife slicing butter. The momentum of my swing almost pulled me into the jagged wound. I recovered and swung again … again … again. I didn't stop until what had been an antique door became a splintered mess.
Dismayed at my outburst, I stepped back from the debris and threw the sledgehammer and my disgust into the night. This time, Solomon spoke gently [through Proverbs 29:11]. I ran my fingers through my wet and matted hair.
I wondered if I would ever be wise.

My Response: Using Solomon's gauge, where would I fall on the foolish–wise continuum?
Thought to Apply: Anger begins with folly, and ends with repentance.—H. G. BOHN (British publisher)
