Men of Integrity, July/August 2006

Theme of the Week: Whose Fences?
Sunday, July 16

Who Said It
Ed Gungor

Ed Gungor is on the teaching team at Peoples Church of Tulsa, Oklahoma, which meets in the Renaissance Hotel Convention Center. He is known for communicating practical truth in a down-to-earth conversational style. Ed is also a writer and conference speaker who conducts Healthy Spirituality seminars.

What He Said
Colorblinded

Back in the '80s, I sported a pair of "as seen on TV" BluBlocker sunglasses that claimed to protect the eyes from UV and blue light. One day, as my family and I were heading out of town, we stopped to fill up with gas and grab some treats from the quick mart. Gail asked me to get her some of her favorite gum—the kind in the big blue pack. I grabbed it, paid, and brought it back to the car.

We were heading down the road when she asked, "Why didn't you get me my regular kind?"

"I did," I answered.

"No, you didn't," she said, pointing to the pack.

"Gail, the pack is blue," I said sarcastically. "That's the kind you like!"

She paused for a second and said, "Take off the BluBlockers, Eddie." When I did, the pack turned green.

That's what happens to us. Our experiences form ideas, presuppositions, and even prejudices that color our reasoning and interpretive skills. So what looks true to us sometimes isn't, and what looks untrue is sometimes true.

0  Prayer for the Week 0

Lord, make me aware of the cultural blinders I bring to your Word, and please keep me from becoming a modern Pharisee.
