As I softly sing my daughter toward dreamland, her eyes flutter. "Daddy?" she asks, "What does God look like?"
"God is a spirit," I begin. "We can't see Him with our eyes, but we can sort of see Him by watching other people."
"Like who?"
"If we watch Jesus, we'll know what the Father is like."
"But Jesus isn't here anymore. I can't watch Him."
"Then showing you what God looks like is up to me."
She grins. "Really? Will you go up to heaven and take a picture?"
I poke her nose. "No, silly goose. But when God makes a father, He pours a bunch of His own qualities into him."
"Like what?"
"Like protection, guidance, and"—I tickle her ribs—"anything that makes you smile."
"I'd rather have a picture."
She giggles.
I stand up tall. "Well, think of me as your picture of God." We both laugh, and I tuck her in, whispering, "I can't be everything God is, sweetheart, but I can show you how He loves you like a father. Will that be enough?"
"That's enough," she yawns.
