No Such Thing?
Theme of the Week: Squaring Off Against the Enemy
Sunday, October 29

Who Said It
John Bolin

John Bolin is a teaching pastor at New Life Church in Colorado Springs. But he began his career in the business world and then shifted to become a youth pastor. He is popular as a speaker to both business and church groups, as a drama producer, and as a writer. A recent book of his is Life Unlimited: When Average Isn't Enough. John and his wife, Sarah, have four children.

What He Said
No Such Thing?

Pollsters report that lots of us (even so-called Christians) believe there's no such thing as the devil. But just take a walk through Blockbuster Video. Or turn on your TV. Why are we so curious about the underworld? Maybe because it's more real than we want to admit.

Of course the devil doesn't take the form of a cape-wearing ghoul with horns and tail. But don't be fooled. He's alive and well, and poses our greatest threat. If we're ever going to break through the things that limit us, it's high time we wise up.

Paul talked about making sure "that Satan will not outsmart us," and about being "very familiar with his evil schemes" (2 Corinthians 2:11). This enemy is no idiot. He's cunning, crafty, and cruel. We can summarize his attributes under three names for him: He's the accuser, the deceiver, and the tempter. And in those roles the three primary weapons in his arsenal are guilt, fear, and greed. In one way or another, everything he throws at us can be traced to these.

0  Prayer for the Week 0

Give me the resolve, Lord, to block Satan's accusations by citing my justification through Christ, and his deceptions and enticements by focusing on You.
