Who Said It…Brian Doyle
Brian Doyle studied for a business career. But he was diverted into gospel ministry in New England. He served with The Navigators on campuses, military bases, and in professional communities in the region. He next spearheaded the Promise Keepers thrust there. Since then, he's directed the men's ministries focus of Vision New England, hosting Man2ManExpress, a daily radio program. He's chaplain to a Minnesota Twins farm team, the New Britain Rock Cats. For years as our family finished breakfast, we'd hold hands and I'd pray for each member. But one day as we were eating breakfast, I realized that I'd made an early morning appointment and was already late!
I quickly got up and began to exit when my oldest daughter, Jessica, exclaimed, "Dad, you didn't pray for us!" I stopped in my tracks, put my hands on my oldest boy's shoulders, and prayed a quick 20-second prayer for him. I moved to the left and prayed a 30-second prayer for another son. Moving around the table, I quickly stood behind, and prayed specifically for, each family member.
Presto! A new tradition was born. We no longer hold hands as I pray. Now I rotate around the table with my hands on the shoulders of my wife, Barbara, and each child. God has wired us to bless each member of our family. You, too, can do this daily. Your prayers can be short, but make them personal.
It's all in the hands.
