Gift Wrap Theme of the Week: The Infinity/Humanity Barrier Breached Gary Thomas Monday, December 25, 2006
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: God put into effect a different plan to save us. He sent his own Son in a human body (Romans 8:3). Bonus Reading: Hebrews 2:14-15
Rabbi Nancy Fuchs-Kreimer and her husband were nestled in their house on December 24, holding their six-day-old baby, when a Catholic priest knocked on their door.
Nancy was attending school at the time, and she assumed he'd come to collect chapters for her dissertation. So she explained that she hadn't done much in the past few weeks except produce the small bundle she held in her arms.
The priest assured Nancy that he hadn't come about the dissertation. "It's the Lord's birthday tomorrow," he said, "so I wanted to hold a baby in my arms." That remark sparked an "aha!" moment for Nancy. "Having studied Christianity, I'd read about incarnation," she writes, "but for the first time I really 'got it.' In the Christian imagination, God was once a tiny body just like this!"
What Nancy calls "the Christian imagination" we call historic fact; but we can understand her wonder. The flesh of a baby seems a particularly unglamorous package to put a God in. Babies drool, cry, and mess their diapers. They're everything a God isn't supposed to be: frail, weak, utterly dependent. Yet our God came wrapped in just such a package. What deep wisdom did He have to draw on to come up with that one?

My Response: I'll thank God for wrapping Himself with the flesh of a baby.
