Seal Training Theme of the Week: Rising from the Ranks Mark Chanski Wednesday, November 29, 2006
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: When your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything (James 1:4). Bonus Reading: Luke 16:10-12
Jerry decided to pursue engineering at a highly regarded technical school. During the first week, he heard students talk of how difficult the program was. Almost half, he was told, change majors after the first year. Calculus was a "weed-'em-out" course. Out of 300 prospective engineers in his freshman class, an alumnus reported, only 60 graduated with an engineering degree.
In his third month, Jerry did hit stormy seas in calculus. It was taking all he had to keep from capsizing. He began to think, Maybe I made a wrong decision. Maybe it's not God's will for me to press on in this engineering course. He was tempted to change majors.
An older man told Jerry that becoming an engineer was like training to become a Navy Seal; only the ones who resolve to stick it out through adversity make it. Sure, they hate bobbing up and down in ten feet of water with their ankles and wrists tied behind their backs. Sure, they hate standing at attention for hours half naked, soaking wet on a beach in a driving 40-mile-an-hour wind. But those who stick it out, become highly esteemed and privileged Seals.
Jerry stuck it out. On his next calculus test he scored 95 percent.

My Response: An obstacle I've surmounted in my commitment to serving Christ is …
Thought to Apply: A change of course is not necessarily God's will simply because we encounter obstacles and misgivings.—MARK CHANSKI (Michigan pastor)
