Key Bible Verse: In those days I was the king's cup-bearer (Nehemiah 1:11). Bonus Reading: Nehemiah 5:14-19
When he was ten years old, Ben Grieve was a batboy for the Texas Rangers. He got their gear ready, made sure they had all their equipment, and took care of those special bats. His position allowed him to see how major leaguers carried themselves, worked to improve their games, and interacted.
Twelve years later, Grieve was on the other end of things. He'd made it to the major leagues as a rookie with the Oakland A's. As a batter, he could put into practice all he had learned as a batboy.
When Nehemiah was a young man, he worked for King Artaxerxes as the monarch's cupbearer. This serving position gave Nehemiah valuable insights into the inner workings of a government. Eventually this inside information benefited him when he became governor of Judah.
"Is this all I'm called to do?" we may mutter about what we're doing today. Sometimes it is, but usually God has us in today's position to teach us vital lessons that will make us the kind of leaders He wants us to be tomorrow. Are we learning, growing, and listening, eager to use God's opportunities as a springboard for the next thing He wants us to do for Him?
