Men of Integrity, January/February 2007

Do the Right Thing
Theme of the Week: Take Control of Your Desires
Monday, February 26

Key Bible Verse: For you have been called to live in freedom—not freedom to satisfy your sinful nature, but freedom to serve one another in love (Galatians 5:13). Bonus Reading: Psalm 63:1-8

God calls us to freedom, giving us a choice, not because choice itself is right (or wrong) but because giving us a choice makes it possible for us to choose to do right, to say yes to Him.

Our situation is much like that of the coast-to-coast airline passenger who was asked by the flight attendant, "Would you like dinner?"

"What are my choices?" the traveler asked.

"Yes or no," came the answer.

He gives us freedom for one purpose and one purpose only: so that we can choose obedience and righteousness. He gives us choices not so that we can do whatever we want but so that we can do the right thing.

Peter, the Galilean fisherman who was one of the first to follow Jesus, put it this way: "You are not slaves; you are free. But your freedom is not an excuse to do evil. You are free to live as God's slaves" (1 Peter 2:16).

Choice that is used to seek God and follow hard after him is in little or no danger of becoming idolatrous. But choice that is used to stubbornly keep on doing whatever we feel like doing has already crossed over the line into idolatry.
