Weekend Wrap-up
Theme of the Week: How to Spell Love with Your Wife
Saturday, February 17, 2007

"While knowledge may make us feel important, it is love that really builds up the church," Paul wrote earlier (8:1) in his letter to the believers at Corinth. The "Love Chapter" (13) expands on this theme. There he adds tongues speaking, prophecy, spectacular faith, and suffering martyrdom as achievements that remain empty if love is absent. Paul describes what love looks like in a congregation, but it applies equally to a married couple.

Interact with God's Word

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

  1. What positive qualities does Paul list to describe what love is?
  2. How is kindness (v. 4) conveyed in a relationship?
  3. What sustains love through tough circumstances (v. 7)?
  4. On the negative side, what does Paul say love is not?
  5. What do you need to do to diminish irritation (v. 5) in your interactions?
  6. Why will keeping score (v. 5) undermine your love?
  7. How would "getting" this paragraph erase the contemporary confusion between love and lust?
  8. Is the love level described here possible without divine motivation and empowerment?
Spend Time in Prayer

Ask God to help you, quite apart from the lovableness of the other person, to love in obedience to His command.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged.

6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.

0Prayer for the Week

Lord, may my love for You and for my mate drive me to replace self-centeredness with attentiveness, thoughtfulness, and serving.
