Who Said It…Todd Wendorff
Growing up in an outdoors-oriented family, Todd came by his love for extreme sports naturally. He belongs to a master swim team and does competition mountain biking. He skis, too—both on snow and water. These pursuits help him connect with guys as the associate pastor for men's ministry and small groups at King's Harbor Church in Redondo Beach, California. Todd is a co-author of the Doing Life Together Bible Study series (Zondervan). What He Said…Rugby and Quiche
Studying in the library during my student days at UC Berkeley in the '80s, I came across Bruce Feirstein's book Real Men Don't Eat Quiche. I was living in a frat house and playing for Cal's rugby team—and yet I liked quiche. (Our frat house cook made it regularly.) What man wouldn't like quiche? It's made of eggs, bacon, and piecrust!
I remember thinking, What crazy meathead wrote this book? What does quiche have to do with being a real man? Eating quiche doesn't make me less of a man!
Society has been pretty hard on men. It's admonished us to be nicer, more sensitive, less like the traditional "real men" of John Wayne lore. But can't we be both? Isn't a godly man caring and tough at the same time?
If quiche had been on the first-century menu, the kind of real man Paul described in his letters—ready to sacrifice his life for a cause he believed in, but not embarrassed to reveal a more caring side—would have dug in.
