Street Smarts Theme of the Week: A Man's Caring Side Todd Wendorff Monday, April 16, 2007

Key Bible Verse: Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance(1 Corinthians 13:7).Bonus Reading: 2 Samuel 9:1-7
For a decade Kevin directed a campus ministry at USC. No one could outcare, outgive, or outencourage Kevin. He's the quintessential giver. He believes in, and helps everyone.
There was a lot of crime where we lived near the campus, and I'd sometimes see Kevin chasing after a thief who'd just stolen something from the dorm or a student's apartment. When Kevin caught the offender, instead of taking a baseball bat to his head before going to the police, he'd lecture the guy and then give him another chance at life.
One day Kevin met a homeless man living on the streets near his apartment. Believing the best, he reached out to Dwayne. But Kevin didn't just give him a handful of change; he set up a bank account for Dwayne and helped him find a job. Kevin cared for this guy as if he were a brother. Through Kevin's help, Dwayne restored his relationship with his children and got back on his feet. Even when Dwayne failed and ended up in jail for theft, Kevin was there to encourage him.
Toward the end of that year, Kevin visited Dwayne in the county hospital as he lay dying of cancer. Until the very end, Kevin stood by Dwayne's side, loving him with Christ's love.

My Response: What would it take for me to believe the best about someone who outwardly shows little potential?
