Shout of Triumph
Theme of the Week: Paid in Full
John Stott
Thursday, April 5, 2007

Key Bible Verse: When Jesus had tasted it, he said, "It is finished!" Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit (John 19:30).Bonus Reading: Matthew 27:45-51

The words of Jesus' sixth cry from the cross, "It is finished," are arguably the most momentous ever spoken. Already in anticipation Jesus had claimed that He'd completed the work He'd come into the world to do (John 17:4).Now he makes a public declaration of it. This isn't the despairing groan of one dying in resignation and defeat. It's a shout, according to Matthew and Mark, proclaiming a resounding victory.

The Greek verb, in the perfect tense, indicates an achievement with lasting results. It might be rendered, "It has been and remains forever accomplished." For Christ has made what the Letter to the Hebrews (10:12)calls "one sacrifice for sins, good for all time." Because He finished the work of sin bearing, there's nothing left for us to do, or even to contribute.

God confirmed the satisfactory nature of what Christ did by tearing the veil of the temple "from top to bottom." This curtain had hung for centuries between the outer and inner sanctuaries as an emblem of the inaccessibility of God. Only the high priest could enter on the Day of Atonement. Worshipers gathered that afternoon were dramatically informed that the veil was needed no longer. They could now approach God through another, better sacrifice.

My Response: I'll acknowledge that my salvation is totally and only Jesus' doing.

Thought to Apply: The symbol of the religion of Jesus is the Cross, not the scales.—JOHN STOTT
