Back-to-School Night

I stood, waiting to introduce myself to my son's second-grade teacher. Finally it was my turn.
"Hello, I'm Ryan's dad."
"Hello, I'm Mrs. Dubay."
"So, how's Ryan doing in your class?"
"Ryan is the shining light in the class."
For a few seconds I was speechless. Here's why. In our family I put the kids to bed every night I'm home. Ryan's a stickler. He simply won't go to sleep without my praying for him. The night before he started second grade, I knelt next to his bed and asked God to make Ryan "a light to his teacher and his friends at school through his words, through good listening, and through kindness to others." We prayed this way each night leading up to parents' night.
When I got home, Ryan was waiting. I put on a poker face and said, "Guess what the first words out of Mrs. Dubay's mouth were?" When I told him, the words sank deep into his heart, producing a coast-to-coast grin and a hug.
God wanted to let Ryan know that He's real and listening to him. So He showed up where I least expected Him. The key was doing what only I could do, allowing God to do what only He could do.
