Men of Integrity, March/April 2007

Weekend Wrap-up
Theme of the Week: Connect with Your Kids
Saturday, March 31

Today we'd call what Moses describes here teachable moments. "Look for them throughout the day," urge Chuck and Jenni Borsellino in How to Raise Totally Awesome Kids. "They happen during mealtime, drive-time, playtime, bedtime, and all times in between. They're captured, not created. They may come in the form of a song on the radio, a beggar on the street, or an overpayment at the cash register. Each event provides an opportunity to show how a scriptural principle, truth, or conviction is applied."

Interact with God's Word
Deuteronomy 6:6-9, 20-25

  1. What does it means (in v. 6) to "commit yourselves wholeheartedly" to God's priorities?

  2. Based on the picture presented in verse 7, how does a father impress God's priorities on his children?

  3. Would you call the educating described here as more information-based or life-oriented?

  4. How does the interaction described here differ from your own family's everyday interactions?

  5. What are some practical ways you can place God at the center of your family's life?

  6. What kind of "prosperity and well-being" (v. 24) can your family expect if you engage in saturation spiritual connecting?
Spend Time in Prayer

Ask God to make you alert for teachable moments throughout the day and prepared to capitalize on them.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9, 20-25

6And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. 7Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.

8Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. 9Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

20"In the future your children will ask you, 'What is the meaning of these laws, decrees, and regulations that the Lord our God has commanded us to obey?' 21"Then you must tell them, 'We were Pharaoh's slaves in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his strong hand. 22The Lord did miraculous signs and wonders before our eyes, dealing terrifying blows against Egypt and Pharaoh and all his people.

23He brought us out of Egypt so he could give us this land he had sworn to give our ancestors. 24And the Lord our God commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear him so he can continue to bless us and preserve our lives, as he has done to this day. 25For we will be counted as righteous when we obey all the commands the Lord our God has given us.'
