Men of Integrity, May/June 2007

First and Lasting Impression
Theme of the Week: Become a Mentoring Partner
Tuesday, June 26

Key Bible Verse: The godly offer good counsel; they know what is right from wrong. They fill their hearts with God's law (Psalm 37:30-31). Bonus Reading: 2 Timothy 3:10-11, 14

I couldn't believe it when Dave Hill, a successful businessman, offered to meet with me. I was working with my brother in a construction company we'd started. But I was a financial wreck and confused about what I wanted to do in life.

Our first lunch was incredible. There I was, sitting across from the kind of person I wanted to become one day: accomplished, confident, in control of his finances, and exhibiting a clear sense of what his life was about. He seemed at peace with himself and content—everything I lacked. I felt intimidated at first, but Dave's interest and genuineness enabled me to gradually relax.

After I left the restaurant, I sat in my car without turning on the ignition as tears welled up in my eyes. I just knew that once Dave saw the mess I'd made of my life, he wouldn't want to waste his time meeting with me. But I was wrong. We'd scheduled an appointment for the next week, and, when I arrived at the restaurant, Dave was there. As we talked, he asked a lot of direct questions, but not once did I feel judged. To my amazement, Dave accepted me for me. He met me right where I was. [continued 6/27]
