Theme of the Week: The Creator's Cadence
Sunday, May 20

Who Said It
Fil Anderson

Sometimes the only way to get a new life is by running your old one completely into the ground. That's what happened to Fil Anderson. His book Running on Empty candidly relates how he recovered from busyness for God and learned to live with God. Fil worked with Young Life for 25 years. He now leads Journey Resources, based in Greensboro, North Carolina. That involves directing retreats and workshops around the country, and offering individual spiritual direction.

What He Said
Simple Rhythms

I once asked my father-in-law about his life when he was a young boy, growing up on a farm in South Carolina. "Do you remember life being as noisy, busy, and hurried as it is today?" I asked.

Looking at me with an incredulous smile, he responded. "Don't go thinking that noise and being busy and hurried are newfangled inventions. I remember getting up with the sun and working hard all day long. But when the sun went down, we knew how to call it quits!" After a thoughtful pause, he added, "Some of my favorite memories are of our family lounging on the front porch or playing in the yard on a warm summer night or sitting in front of the fire on cold evenings."

Men back then were no strangers to hard work. But they were wise enough to live in balance. When did we stop calling it quits at the end of the day?

And a more basic question. Why?
