Men of Integrity, May/June 2007

Headed for a Crash?
Theme of the Week: The Creator's Cadence
Friday, May 25

Key Bible Verse: It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones (Psalm 127:2). Bonus Reading: Hebrews 4:9-11

What are the signs that things are about to spin out of control in your life? Ask yourself a few questions:

Family: Am I spending time listening to, and encouraging, my wife? Am I missing more of my kids' important activities? Do my wife and kids want to spend time with me?

Lifestyle: Am I eating properly, sleeping well, and getting enough exercise?

Finance: Have I stopped putting money aside for retirement? Have I misused my credit cards?

Personal: Are my times with God as meaningful as they used to be? When did I last have a meaningful conversation (more than news, sports, and weather) with a male friend? Am I in public the same person I am in private?

Time: Am I leaving any important priorities unattended? Am I sharing chores around the house?

If you weren't too impressed with your answers, you may be about to go into overload. To avert a crisis, you need for some spiritual circuit breakers to kick in. That only happens when you spend more time with Jesus, focusing on stillness, prayer, and Bible meditation. These exercises can "reset" your breakers.

—Patrick Morley in The Christian Businessman

My Response: To reset my "circuit breakers," I need to take a time out to …

Thought to Apply: For fast-acting relief try slowing down.—LILY TOMLIN (comedian)
