Men of Integrity, May/June 2007

The Russian Pilot
Theme of the Week: Slaying Sin
Monday, May 28

Key Bible Verse: But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life (Romans 6:22). Bonus Reading: Romans 6:1-14

During the Cold War, a Russian pilot flew his fighter plane to an American Air Force base in Japan and asked for asylum. He was flown to the U.S., debriefed, given a new identity, and set up as a resident of the United States.

The pilot's experience illustrates what happened to us when we died to sin and were made alive to God. No longer under the rule of what was then a totalitarian government, he was free to experience all the advantages and resources of living in a free and prosperous country.

This former pilot still had the same personality, habits, and cultural patterns as he did before he flew out of Russia. But, as a result of his new identity and status, he had the opportunity to grow as a free person, to discard the mindset and habit patterns of a person living under a despotic regime.

Furthermore, he was furnished all he needed to make a successful transition to an American citizen. All the resources of our government were at his disposal to become in fact what he had become in status.

0  Prayer for the Week 0

Forgive me, Lord, for minimizing the gift of my reconciliation to You through Christ by failing to confront my sinfulness.
