After Jane died of cancer, I struggled for 11 years as a widower—then began thinking about remarriage.

I wasn't very good at dating! But during those years my path had crossed that of Nancy Fox, an old friend of Jane's. Ours was a casual friendship, but circumstances threw us together over two weekends. We shared our stories, sensed that God's timing was right, and decided to be in love.

As Nancy and I called out-of-town friends to let them know we were engaged, I called Kathy in Oregon. She'd been a good friend of Jane's. I told her whom I was marrying.

After a long silence, she said, "I don't know her, but I do know her name."

Kathy explained that the February before Jane died, she and Jane had met at a conference. Jane was very sick, and they knew it was the last time they'd see each other. Jane told Kathy that Nancy Fox was the one person she could see me with after her death.

Although Jane had told me that she had picked out the person she wanted me to marry, she wouldn't tell me who it was.

Now I can see God's grace and providence.
