Men of Integrity, July/August 2007

Rookie Commander
Theme of the Week: Conquering Heroes
Monday, July 16

Key Bible Verse: "The Lord is with us! Don't be afraid of them!" (Numbers 14:9). Bonus Reading: Exodus 17:8-13, 24:12-13, 33:7,11; Numbers 14:1-9, 27:22-23

When the fierce desert tribe of Amalek launched an attack on the ragtag Hebrew nation moving through its area, Moses called in Joshua, a relatively young man. He commanded him to assemble a force and go into battle the very next day. This was no easy assignment. Joshua wasn't a military commander. Like his companions, he'd spent his young life making bricks for Pharaoh. His battle experience was nil, his use of arms minimal.

Joshua's prompt response was amazing! He didn't offer excuses for not going into action. He didn't plead inexperience or lack of military training. He simply set out to do this impossible assignment quickly and resolutely.

This gives us the key to the man's remarkable character. He combined complete obedience to God's will with a resolute faith that God would empower him to carry out His commands. Joshua had an unshakable assurance in the Lord God. Whatever God asked of him, he would do without fear.

Joshua's name affirms his mental posture: "God is salvation." It is God who saves, who delivers, who grants glorious victory over the enemy.

—Phillip Keller in Joshua: Mighty Warrior and Man of Faith

My Response: In what area do I need to trust God to empower me to carry out His commands?
