Men of Integrity, September/October 2007

Subversive Joy
Theme of the Week: Joy: A Trait to Cultivate
Friday, October 19

Key Bible Verse: Whatever happens, dear brothers and sisters, may the Lord give you joy (Philippians 3:1). Bonus Reading: 1 Peter 4:12-13

Dwight went to his doctor for an MRI. My 38-year-old friend had complained about back pains for several months and finally decided to get a checkup. He was the kind of guy who worried that he wouldn't be able to play golf. After the first test, the doctor was concerned, so he ran additional tests. Then the doctor straightforwardly told Dwight he had bone cancer.

At first, Dwight was in denial. But one night as Dwight lay in bed, he lifted his head, found chunks of hair, and faced reality. Yet surprisingly, in the midst of his chemotherapy-induced nausea and fear of confronting his mortality at such a young age, Dwight's life became a living epistle.

During the beginning stages of his treatment, as he wrestled with the "whys" and "why me," Dwight wrote that he tried to "let joy subvert the situation." With death nipping at his heels and bitterness and anger the typical reactions, Dwight made a decision: he would let joy rule. His countenance and attitude have been unbelievable—using his smile and laughter to brighten the lives of his friends. His impact on others has been remarkable. He has maintained a sense of humor and a faith that has encouraged many.

My Response: How could I use joy to undermine the negative situations I face?

Thought to Apply: Joy is that deep settled confidence that God is in control in every area of my life.—PAUL SAILHAMER (California pastor)
