… or Under Demonic Attack? Theme of the Week: Satan: Scary but not Invincible

Key Bible Verse: Be careful! Watch out for attacks from the Devil, your great enemy. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour 1 Peter 5:8). Bonus Reading: 1 Timothy 3:6-7;; 2 Tim. 2:25-26
A few years later, I visited a small mountain church in the Philippines. People were standing at the back and sides, spilling into the street, and crowding around the open windows. I asked the pastor why so many had come. He told me it was because he and the elders had cast a demon out of a woman after the village witch doctor had failed. He said, "Steve, this is what happens when God's power is revealed."
Between those two incidents, I'd seen Satan walking down the streets of a city slum, watched him do his work with a needle dripping heroin, and seen his destructive power in the bottle clutched by a drunk sleeping it off on a park bench. I read his handwriting on a suicide note and saw him smiling as the crowds lined up to watch an "adult" film. I'd seen him in the sneer of the racist and in the lies of a politician whose only concern was power. I encountered Satan in the evils of poverty and oppression and in the death of a man who wept as he died of AIDS. Between those two incidents, I grew up and realized that evil is personal, scary, and powerful.
