Mortgage Ministry
Theme of the Week: Belonging in Business
Tuesday, September 4

Key Bible Verse: And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus (Colossians 3:17). Bonus Reading: Genesis 41:37-49

Patrick Flood was on the rise at a top Atlanta lending institution, HomeBanc Mortgage Corporation. But one night he woke up tossing, turning, and pondering his responsibility for people. "I thought I was being called into ministry," he told a reporter. But after prayer and soul-searching, Patrick concluded God wasn't calling him to be a pastor but did have a ministry in mind. "The Lord was calling me to be responsible for people in the marketplace."

Today Patrick puts biblical principles to work at his job, allowing HomeBanc employees to be open about—even celebrate—faith in the workplace. And National Public Radio featured the HomeBanc story, exposing millions of listeners to Patrick's convictions.

My friend Ike Reighard, also interviewed on that broadcast, recently left pastoring after 30 years to lead HomeBanc's human resources. "There's no job big enough to fill your spirit," Ike told the NPR reporter; "there has to be a sense of calling." Too many Christians separate the faith part of life from work. They check at the office or factory door the very thing that could make the greatest difference in their coworkers' lives and give them the strength and courage to make the best on-the-job decisions.

—Bob Reccord in On Mission

My Response: How open am I about my faith on the job?

Thought to Apply: There's no higher calling than to be where God calls us—whether in "full-time" Christian work, or at the local hardware store.—OS HILLMAN
