Getting It
Theme of the Week: Belonging in Business
Friday, September 7

Key Bible Verse: Jesus replied, "You don't understand now why I am doing it; someday you will" (John 13:7). Bonus Reading: John 13:1, 4-7, 12-16

A coworker, with whom I'd earlier had a conversation about truthfulness, said something to me one day that floored me: "I've been bummed about having to work on Sundays, not able to go to church. But working with you actually ministers to me."

I'd prefer not to work on Sundays. Serving in a retail environment at the time, though, I understood the staffing need and had resolved to do my best. God seemed to be affirming my labors, telling me that what truly counts is neither the day of the week nor the work environment, but how we treat others, and whether we serve as if employed by Him.

The disciple Peter was stunned when Christ washed his feet, and didn't get it. Jesus responded [with today's Key Bible Verse]. When it comes to our workplace, do we get it? Plenty of church-going men blend in so well at work, you'd never know they were Christians. But the secular work world isn't used to seeing servant-leadership; when lived out, it acts as a powerful attractant to Him.

Christ's example, as the foot-washer, has a special power. The point isn't when or where you work, but what you're doing to be a light to others. Do you minister by serving?

—Jeffrey Leever in Colorado

My Response: A coworker who could really use my sacrificial service is ____.

Thought to Apply: In God's family there is to be one great body of people: Servants. In fact, that's the way to the top in His kingdom.—CHUCK SWINDOLL (pastor & educator)
