Soak Yourself in the Bible
Theme of the Week: God's Word on His Terms
Marcus Honeysett
Friday, September 21, 2007

Key Bible Verse: Ezra had determined to study and obey the law of the Lord and to teach [it] to the people of Israel Ezra 7:10. Bonus Reading: Nehemiah 8:1-8

Good Bible study patterns don't just happen. They're a skill; learning them requires a time investment. Have a regular time and place to read. Be systematic and disciplined. Don't open your Bible casually; you're preparing to hear God speak! Pray as you begin and ask God to help you understand His Word. Read large chunks of the Bible. Go for a book. Read it over a week or a month and find out the whole message of the book. It's meant to be read like this, not in little pieces.

Learn to ask good questions of the Bible: What is actually going on in the passage? What did it mean to its original hearers? What does it mean today? (It can't mean today what it didn't mean to them!) What is God teaching me about Himself here? Is God teaching me anything about me here? What should I do as a result of this passage? How am I going to make sure I do it? Write down what you've learned. Make a note of things you don't understand and look them up. Pray through what you've learned. Ask God to help you live out the consequences of the passage you read.

My Response: A Bible reading discipline I'm resolved to adopt is …

Thought to Apply: Speed-reading may be a good thing but it was never meant for the Bible. It takes calm, thoughtful, prayerful meditation on the Word to extract its deepest nourishment.—VANCE HAVNER (North Carolina preacher & author)
