Men of Integrity, November/December 2007

… Open Up to Faithful Friends
Theme of the Week: Virtual Fixations Are for Real
Friday, December 21

Key Bible Verse: I have made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust on a young woman (Job 31:1). Bonus Reading: Romans 13:11-14

One Saturday morning while snowmobiling far from home, my cell phone rang. I could hear the concern in my wife's voice. "Someone has been on your computer."

Earlier that year we'd installed Covenant Eyes (see today's Key Bible Verse) Accountability Software on all our home computers. The program is not an internet filter. It simply monitors all computer activity. It's like having someone in the room with you every time you sit down at the keyboard. Detailed reports are e-mailed every week to a pre-selected list of accountability partners.

That morning Dianne had received a very bad report. I explained how she could temporarily disable the computer so no one could use it until I returned. I asked why she did not suspect I'd been surfing the inappropriate sites. She replied, "I receive your reports every week. This report was obviously different."

The system worked! My weekly reports had produced confidence in Dianne. More than that, the brother who had used my computer need no longer struggle alone. The Covenant Eyes report alerted me and my accountability partners to his battle. We all committed to pray for him and shepherd him through the process of creating his own set of accountability partners.

—Mark Biehl in Illinois

My Response: Would I be willing to have my computer use tracked? If not, why not?

Thought to Apply: God works in us and with us, not against us or without us. —John Owen (Puritan preacher)

Your Word warns that the Devil's attacks aren't primarily physical. Keep me vigilant to skirmishes in the virtual realm.
