Harold and I were walking back to our hotel room from the evening session of a Christian conference. Up ahead were two guys we'd encountered before. One stood aggressively out on the corner. The other—the one with only one leg—sat against a building. Both held cups, with a few coins in them, extended to all who passed. When Harold started digging in his pocket, I rolled my eyes in disbelief. He'd already given these guys his pocket change three times!
"Sorry, I don't have any more with me," Harold told the first guy, "but my friend here has some folding money." Three sets of eyes turned on me. Resenting the position Harold had put me in, I dug into my pocket and awkwardly handed the first man a dollar bill. By then Harold was waiting for me in front of the second man, who also received my reluctant donation.
As we walked on, I half-jokingly told Harold I didn't appreciate him giving away my money like that. He said he just felt like he needed to give, and offered to pay me back when we got to our room. But for some reason I didn't want to do that. In fact, I became a more generous person that night.

My Response: Do I bristle at the thought of giving money to someone who might blow it? Should I?
