Theme of the Week: Prayer Outcomes
Bobby Ashley
Thursday, November 15, 2007

Key Bible Verse: He will be gracious if you ask for help. He will respond instantly to the sound of your cries (Isaiah 30:19). Bonus Reading: Psalm 145:17-20

Evelyn, my youngest daughter, and her next-door friend were into gymnastics. One day Evelyn, hanging upside down from the five-foot-high gate between our yards, tried to flip and land on her feet—but fell headfirst. She ran inside to her grandmother crying, "Nana, my head hurts." My mother woke up Lady, my wife, who worked nights. They saw Evelyn, her little hands outstretched, feeling her way to Nana's bedroom. Lady called me at work, telling me to meet them at the hospital.

Arriving at her darkened ER cubicle, I saw the doctor shine his flashlight and ask Evelyn, "How many fingers do you see?" "Five." He took away three fingers. "Now how many?" "Five." He held up three fingers. "Five fingers."

The doctor admitted Evelyn for observation. Her blindness could last a week or a year, he said, or be over tomorrow. Finding an empty cubicle, I leaned on a gurney and prayed, "Dear God, give her back her eyesight." Voicing that simple request brought a peace I can't explain.

That evening, I sat by Evelyn's bed reading to her. As I slowly turned a page with large pictures on it, Evelyn said, "Turn the page, Daddy, so I can see the other picture." What a joy that God had restored her sight so quickly!

My Response: I'll thank the Great Physician for His healing power.

Thought to Apply: More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of. —Alfred Tennyson (English poet)
