A Husband's Toughest Task
Theme of the Week: A Husband's Sacrifice Play
Barry St. Clair
Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Key Bible Verse: You will submit to one another out of reverence for Christ Ephesians 5:21). Bonus Reading: Ephesians 5:21-33

Tenderness doesn't come naturally to most men. Surprise! But it does come supernaturally! Spiritual or sexual resistance may indicate that I've missed the mark in nourishing and cherishing my wife. [Today's Bonus Reading] lays out the lumber for building a sound marriage frame.

In the verses (22-24) directed to wives, Paul says, "a husband is the head of his wife." But complete the sentence—"as Christ is head of his body, the church: he gave his life to be her Savior." The head isn't a controller, but takes responsibility for his wife with sensitivity to her thoughts and feelings, and a burden for her well-being.

Now the husband's part of the frame (verses 25-29): God put me in my marriage to meet my wife's needs. As I submit myself in attitude and action to serve her, I'll show interest in her daily activities, build her self-esteem, relieve her from daily stress, and attend to her relationship with God. As one husband said, "Our home isn't our castle; it's our Calvary."

When we choose to sacrifice for our wives, it's like sunshine on a flower, allowing her to blossom as a woman. She experiences fulfillment and will share with us the deepest parts of her life.

My Response: A need of my wife's that I could do a better job of meeting is …

Thought to Apply: When you love, you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve.—Ernest Hemingway (writer)
