We were 50 men on a mission: to encourage moms whose men had gone MIA, vicariously repenting for those deadbeats. Each car was loaded with baskets filled with meal kits, school supplies, toiletries, gift cards, and a Bible. The attached card read: On behalf of the pastors in your community, a gift for you.
"Mom," one boy yelled, "there's a bunch of white guys on the porch holding a big basket. Should I let 'em in?"
Tracy opened reluctantly. I explained why we were there and presented the basket. She looked dazed; her kids jumped up and down to see the contents. "Is there anything we can do for you while we're here?" I asked.
"Well," she hesitated, "I think there's a dead cat in our crawl space. The house reeks. The animal control guy didn't fit, so he gave up. Do you think …?" A utility meter blocked access. A cat could fit through the remaining opening—but a man?
Dennis stepped up, firmly grasping a plastic trash bag. He managed to slip under the house. Emerging grimy and smelling like a litter box, he triumphantly hoisted the bag with its rigid feline silhouette aloft. Tracy cried as we prayed for her and her children.
