Unimpressed with Himself Theme of the Week: Dependent but Confident Mark Rutland Monday, January 7, 2008
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Don't try to act important, but enjoy the company of ordinary people Romans 12:16. Bonus Reading: Luke 14:7-11
"How's your boy, Bob?" asks the tall, slim man in the plaid shirt.
"Fine, Mr. Blanchard," answers a burly truck driver with a day's growth of beard. "He took a turn for the good last week."
"Well, we're praying."
There's nothing unusual about this exchange in the gravel parking lot of a Christian men's retreat. Not, that is, until you realize that "Mr. Blanchard" is James H. Blanchard, CEO and chairman of the board of Synovus.
Phenomenally successful in business and extremely influential in politics, Blanchard disdains any hint of flamboyance and extravagance.
Approachable, humble, and a fiercely dedicated Christian, he lives where he was born, in Columbus, Georgia. He's resisted calls to move his credit card empire, worth more than $20 billion, to New York. "Columbus is home,'" he says in his soft Southern drawl. "Blanchard," a convenience store owner in Columbus said, "is real people."
Blanchard is quietly comfortable with his own success, falling neither to prideful self-promotion nor to the false humility of the inwardly arrogant. He's as comfortable on a bass lake as he is in a boardroom, more concerned with the truck driver's son than with the stock market.
