Men of Integrity, March/April 9008

Always Like This?
Theme of the Week: No Strings Attached
Friday, April 11

Key Bible Verse: When others are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us (2 Corinthians 1:4). Bonus Reading: Galatians 6:2-3

A family that owned a restaurant began attending our church. A member, eating at the restaurant, discovered that the mother had just learned she had cancer. The caring member invited her to our cancer-related support group. She and her husband found a room full of fellow cancer patients and survivors who understood, cared, and prepared them for what lay ahead. A group leader visited them weekly, sharing, caring, and loving them through the ups and downs of chemotherapy.

The cancer progressed. So did this family's dependence on God. Shortly after both parents trusted Christ, the mother went into a coma. The support group gathered; other church folk poured in. The hospital staff had to create a larger space in the oncology unit to fit all the singing, praying people. She died and entered her new eternal home.

The church was packed for the funeral—mostly with restaurant patrons unexposed to the gospel. Church members prepared food, and set up chairs and tables. After the service, some guests asked, "Is this church always like this?"

"Yes, it is."

"And you talk like that about life, death, God, heaven?"

"Yes."

"I'm going to come back."

—Chip Ingram in Holy Ambition

My Response: I'll thank God for believers who impact others with their outpouring of selfless care.

Thought to Apply: Kindness has converted more sinners than zeal, eloquence, or learning. —Frederick Faber

Help me, Lord, to model the gospel so caringly that people will demand an explanation.
