Freedom's Boundaries Theme of the Week: Liberating Commandments Sunday, April 20, 2008

Who Said It…Randy Newman
Randy Newman is not the famous singer/songwriter. He has served with Campus Crusade for Christ, relating to students on college campuses. He also teaches a seminar every week at the Pentagon for Campus Crusade's Christian Embassy. His book, Questioning Evangelism (Kregel, 2004), helps believers deal in an engaging manner with objections to the gospel. What He Said…Freedom's Boundaries
Disobeying God's commandments brings bondage, not freedom. The serpent in the garden said, "You will become just like God" (Genesis 3:5),but God says, "You will surely die"(Genesis 2:17).
Solomon recorded this telling saying: "Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed is he who keeps the law" (Proverbs 29:18 NIV).Revelation (coupled with "law" in the second line of the verse) is something communicated by God to be the plumb line, or standard, of truth. Casting off restraint is what the people did at the foot of Mt. Sinai when they gave up hope of Moses ever returning from his encounter with God. They engaged in the out-of-control debauchery described in Exodus 32.That's what happens when no standard of right and wrong exists.
If we fail to grasp that disobedience brings bondage, we'll never understand why our culture continues to spiral downward. Without the boundaries of Scripture, our sinful hearts flee from the good things that God has for us, imagining we'll find them on our own. Attempting that only leads to misery.
