Does It All Depend?
Theme of the Week: Only One Way?
Tuesday, March 18
Key Bible Verse: "Human wisdom is foolish and even the most brilliant people lack understanding" (Isaiah 29:14). Bonus Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:20-25
Two men meet on a street corner in one of Wiley Miller's Non Sequitur comics. One wears a placard that says, "The facts as they are." He's the modernist; he thinks his view of the world is based on how things actually are. The other's sign reads, "The truth as I see it." He's a postmodernist; he thinks he believes as he does because of his gender, ethnicity, or social context.
In another Non Sequitur strip, a child at a chalkboard has posted an unusual answer to a basic arithmetic problem: "2+2=17." The teacher glares disapprovingly, so the child mounts a desperate defense: "Perhaps," he says, "the discrepancy between the answer I gave and the one you want is due to our socio-economic differences." While most still recognize that the truths of mathematics aren't culturally determined, many believe other areas of truth are. If someone advocates a particular approach to global politics, they say, for example, "You only think that way because you're an American." Or a particular stand on sexual ethics is dismissed because the one holding it is a heterosexual.

My Response: How do I distinguish between opinion and truth?
Thought to Apply: We believe that each man must find the truth that is right for him. Reality will adapt accordingly. The universe will readjust. History will alter. We believe that there is no absolute truth excepting the truth that there is no absolute truth. Steven Turner (in "Creed")
