"Thank You, Obviousman!"
Theme of the Week: Only One Way?
Philip Ryken
Thursday, March 20, 2008

Key Bible Verse: Forever changing our minds … because someone has cleverly … made the lie sound like the truth Ephesians 4:14.Bonus Reading:Isaiah 5:20-21

The virtue postmodernism prizes most is tolerance: everyone ought to accept everyone else's worldview as being true for them. People who deny there is any absolute truth are really introducing another absolute truth—a position that is self-refuting.

This point can also be illustrated from Non Sequitur. A man walks down the street holding a sign that reads, "There are no absolutes in life." But at least one onlooker refuses to let the sign go unchallenged. This mild-mannered businessman peers around the corner of a building and says, "Uh-oh … looks like a job for … Obviousman." He rips off his coat and tie to reveal his superhero costume: a purple leotard with the word "duh" written across the chest and then crossed out.

Obviousman leaps in front of the sign-carrying postmodernist and says, "Hold it right there, you semantic ne'er-do-well. … Your sign makes an absolute statement, thus contradicting your so-called beliefs!" Then as he soars into the sky, a group of grateful bystanders say, "Thank you, Obviousman!!"

—Philip Ryken in Only One Way?

My Response: How could I do a friend a favor by helping him spot defects in his worldview?

Thought to Apply: We believe that all religions are basically the same. At least the one that we read was. They all believe in love and goodness. They only differ on matters of creation, sin, heaven, hell, God, and salvation.—Steven Turner (in his tongue-in-cheek "Creed")
