Who Said It…Mark Galli
Mark Galli is a pastor-turned-editor. His pastoring occurred in Mexico City and Sacramento, California. He came to Christianity Today International 19 years ago, first editing Leadership then Christian History & Biography. Since 2000 he's been managing editor of Christianity Today. Mark plays golf, loves fly-fishing with his son Luke, now graduated from college. And last October he bought his first motorcycle. What He Said…Reality Check
Even on Easter Sunday we often avoid the reality of Christ's power.
The preacher, knowing he'll face a sea of once-a-year, semi-religious visitors, recognizes the anomaly the Resurrection is. So he delivers a sermon that will explain, defend, and justify Jesus' rising from the dead with "evidences for the Resurrection." The entire sermon strives to demonstrate that the Resurrection makes sense, accords with reason, and can slip easily into a compartment of our scientific minds. Let me be fair: I've preached this sermon!
It's not that the arguments for the Resurrection are bogus. It's the inadequate assumption that arguments can "explain" or "make sense" of the Resurrection. We imagine that once the case has been made, there's nothing more to be said. The resurrection is no longer an amazing, mysterious event, one pregnant with meaning and, yes, power. As Paul puts it, Jesus "was shown to be the Son of God when God powerfully raised him from the dead by means of the Holy Spirit" (Romans 1:4).
