He served in the Navy during World War II, then began selling pots and pans, steadily improving his sales skills. Quality family time is tremendously important. But there's no way you can sit down with your child and say, "Now, let's have ten minutes of quality time together—what do you want to talk about?"
I vividly remember one Sunday evening after nine o'clock, when my son Tom and I, along with his friend Sam Wing, were out running together. We finished the run, and as we walked past Sam's house and he peeled off, my son said, "Dad, let's walk." He and I walked for an additional ten minutes.
Those were among the most meaningful minutes I've ever spent with my son. I've forgotten what we talked about, but I vividly remember that I've never felt closer to him. However, those ten minutes probably wouldn't have been so important had he and I not spent time together before then. We'd been in Sunday school and church together; we'd been to lunch together; we'd been together the entire afternoon; we'd had dinner together; and we'd run together. We were totally relaxed, at ease, and communicating together—that's what made those ten minutes so great.
