Your Net Worth Theme of the Week: How Men Measure Themselves Tuesday, June 17, 2008
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: He paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God (1 Peter 1:19). Bonus Reading: Luke 12:6-7
In 1971 I bought my wife a Hummel plate for $21.95. It was the first Christmas plate produced by the famous German firm. Recently Judy and I attended an antique auction where, to our surprise, a 1971 Hummel Christmas plate sold for more than $1,000! What was it about this plate the caused such a remarkable increase in value? Its substance and function hadn't changed. But the original molds had been broken, so there were a limited number of plates and no opportunity for replacement. Its value, as determined by the market forces of supply and demand, had increased; but how had its worth changed?
Publius Sirius, a famous Roman writer a century before Christ, concluded, "A thing is worth what someone will pay for it." But using only price as a measure of worth can be misleading. Publius had been a slave brought from Antioch to Rome, where he was purchased and freed by a wealthy philanthropist. Perhaps he knew the large sum his benefactor paid for him. "Am I worth so much?" he might have asked.
What is any human being worth? A few dollars, which is the total value of his chemical substance? Or is it possible that a person is worth the life of God's Son, Jesus Christ?
—William Pollard in Serving Two Masters?
My Response: I'll thank God for how much I'm worth to Him.
Thought to Apply: Nowadays people know the price of everything and the value of nothing. —Oscar Wilde (Irish playwright & poet)
