Looking Ridiculous
Theme of the Week: How Men Measure Themselves
Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Key Bible Verse: But God made our bodies with many parts, and he has put each part just where he wants it (1 Corinthians 12:18). Bonus Reading: 1 Cor. 12:14-17, 27

Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, set it all aside mid-career to seek his destiny on the baseball diamond. It made no sense. Yet there he was toiling in the minor leagues, desperately trying to learn how to hit a curve ball while the spoils and rewards of NBA championships that were his for the taking went to others.

I wonder if, in God's sight, our quest to measure up to everyone else's best traits doesn't look just as ridiculous. As a new Christian desperately trying to match up to the best of everything spiritual, I didn't realize that the Bible actually warned (see today's Bonus Reading) against trying to be someone else.

There'll always be some areas of the spiritual life where we do far better than most, some where we're rather pedestrian, and some where we're destined to bring up the rear. And just as our areas of excellence in no way excuse prideful arrogance, so too our weaker areas in no way justify a sense of spiritual inferiority, guilt, or insecurity.

If God made you an eye, being hard of hearing is no big deal. Ignore the weakness. Instead of worrying about what you can't hear, keep improving your vision.

—Larry Osborne in A Contrarian's Guide to Knowing God

My Response: What area of excellence could I hone for the Master's use?

Thought to Apply: Though all men are made of one metal, yet they be not cast all in one mold.  —John Lyly

0Prayer for the Week

Lord, help me derive my sense of worth from Your love for me and not from what the world considers important.
