Chapter 11 Faith
Theme of the Week: Divine Table Talk
Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Key Bible Verse: The steps of a man are established by the Lord … When he falls, he will not be hurled headlong, because the Lord … holds his hand (Psalm 37:23-24). Bonus Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17

He's no masochist, but my former pastor relishes being 'broken'—and frequently conscious of it. When he realizes how "sinful and miserable" he is at a given moment (not simply on Sundays), the Lord has him savor the Communion experience of drawing on his sacrificial death.

As a husband and dad, I've often thought I had to have my act together and all enemies defeated to earn acceptance. When we men fall—from battle wounds or weakness—will we be discarded by the Lord like a cracked pot? Absolutely not! Rather, the Lord will prepare a feast for us, even in the presence of our enemies! But he wants only guests at his table who consciously know they're bankrupted—by enemies such as unrighteous anger, contempt, hatred, pride, and arrogance.

Living a sinless intercessory life, my former pastor reminded me, is the role of Christ. My role as a cracked clay jar is to trust his sufficiency. Although the Lord's Supper cost him much, the only admission needed from me is an acknowledged brokenness, hunger, and thirst.

Until you see how desperately you need Him every moment of every day, you have nothing to offer others but self-sufficiency.

—Doug Perkins in Delaware

My Response: What area of excellence could I hone for the Master's use?

Thought to Apply: The Lord's Supper allows us to grasp God's promises.  —Leonard Vander Zee (Indiana pastor)

0Prayer for the Week

Lord Jesus, as I take communion, help me to experience the full benefits of your sacrificial death.
