Weekend Wrap-up Theme of the Week: Divine Table Talk Saturday, June 28, 2008
 1 of 1

Each name for this sacrament suggests an aspect of how we're to join in re-enacting the Passover meal Jesus ate with his disciples. Many call it the Lord's Supper because we're called to be reflective as we commemorate his death and his promise to come again. Others call it the Eucharist (thanksgiving) because in it we thank God for the wonderful gift of Christ's work for us. It's also called Communion because through it we joyfully meet with God and the body of believers. Interact with God's Word
Luke 22:14-20
- Why (v. 15) do you think Jesus attached such significance to this meal? What event did the Passover celebrate? What did that event foreshadow? (See 1 Corinthians 7b.)
- Why (v. 16) did Jesus say he wouldn't drink the memorial cup until …? What assurance would this commitment provide for his disciples?
- What did Jesus say (v. 19) that the broken pieces of bread would represent?
- What did Jesus want his followers to remember?
- What (v. 20) did he say the wine would represent?
- What was the nature of God's "old" covenant with his people? (See Romans 3:19-21)
- How would the new covenant parallel the old one? How would it differ? (Romans 3:22-25a.)
Spend Time in Prayer
Thank God for "the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (John 1:29).
Luke 22:14-20
14 When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table. 15 Jesus said, "I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. 16 For I tell you now that I won't eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God."
17 Then he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. Then he said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. 18 For I will not drink wine again until the Kingdom of God has come."
19 He took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me."
20 After supper he took another cup of wine and said, "This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood, which is poured out as a sacrifice for you.
