Slow Down and Listen Up Theme of the Week: Transformation Is an Inside Job Tom Blackaby Tuesday, May 20, 2008
 1 of 1

Key Bible Verse: Meditate on [this Book of the Law] day and night so you may be sure to obey all that is written in it (Joshua 1:8).Bonus Reading:Psalm 1:1-3
What does authentic meditation look like? It's similar to prayer in that you are interacting with God and asking his Spirit to guide you to understand the truths in his Word. The idea is found, for example, in Job 23:12: "I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread" (NIV). And in our fast paced, success-and-stuff-driven world, that's saying a lot.
David learned about day-long meditation from his days as a shepherd. Not only was he a fierce soldier (learned from protecting his sheep), he was a dedicated, reflective worshiper (learned from days of solitude in the fields). You may relate more to the warrior image as you battle the daily grind, but David's reflective moments are important, however difficult, to emulate these days.
As you practice Scripture meditation, you'll find yourself drawing closer to God, centering your mind on his kingdom, and hearing his voice more clearly. You'll be amazed at what you hear when you stop to listen … and at the ways you'll see yourself change as a result of your encounters with the God of the universe. Just meditate on that!

My Response: The next time I read Scripture, I'll pause and listen for God to speak to me.
Thought to Apply: Speed-reading may be a good thing, but it was never meant for the Bible. It takes calm, thoughtful, prayerful meditation on the Word to extract its deepest nourishment.—Vance Havner (preacher & evangelist)
