In college, an uncool guy named George Dzundra began coming to our Bible study. He spoke with a lisp, was already balding, had zero self-esteem, and was terribly insecure. Being around George was okay on Thursday nights in a Christian group where everyone's supposed to be accepted. But when I hung out with guys on the basketball team, I was embarrassed to be seen with him
I didn't see him for a few months, and when I ran into him again, his pocket was full of index cards with memory verses on them. Someone had taught George the power of memorizing Scripture, and he hadn't done it halfway. He'd memorized all of James and the Gospels of John and Matthew, as well as a couple of Paul's letters! He'd filled his mind with the promises of God and begun dwelling on his identity in Christ rather than his own insecurities. He was now rooted in the knowledge that God loved him, and it showed. He was much more confident and mature. He radiated God's Spirit.
Before long, guys who normally wouldn't even associate with someone like George began coming to him for advice. He listened to their problems and shared God's wisdom with them. I found myself asking if he and I could hang out together.
