Building Blocks
Theme of the Week: Transformation Is an Inside Job
Joe White
Friday, May 23, 2008

Key Bible Verse: "My Word … always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it" ( Isaiah 55:11). Bonus Reading: Psalm 19:7-8,11

Memorizing Scripture at home pays off when dealing with a crisis. If Brady is selfishly hoarding a toy, I can skip the lecture and instead say, "Brady, what's the verse from Philippians [2:5] we learned last night?"

"Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had."

"Great job, Buddy. What kind of attitude did Jesus have, anyway?"

"A good one," he answers soberly.

"Was it selfish or unselfish?"

"Unselfish."

"Okay, what kind of attitude are you wrestling with right now?"

"Selfish." (He said it. I didn't have to.)

"Is that what you want to have today?"

"No, sir."

"What would Jesus do, Brady?"

"Change his attitude and give Cooper the toy."

"Will you do that?"

"Yes, sir."

It worked for us time after time. It's amazing how God's Word fits every situation. It always contains the building blocks for true maturity. It's just like he promises [in today's Key Bible Verse].

My Response: For me, a take-away on parenting from Joe's example is …

Thought to Apply: We think about Scripture because we wish to become "Scripture-shaped", and therefore, "Christ-shaped."—John P. Burgess (author)

0Prayer for the Week

Lord, if I am ever to resist the seductive spirit of our age, I need to absorb Your Word into the core of my life.
